Gregorio Esparza (1802\u20131836), my grandfathers older cousin and Tejano defender of the Alamo under Captain Juan Seguin. Gregorio was the last defender to enter the Alamo with his wife, Ana Salazar, and their five (5) children through the church window under nightfall. He was the only Texan defender given a christian due to his brother, Francisco, in the Mexican army who petition Santa Ana for his body and burial at Campo Santo cemetery. All other 188 defender bodies burned for several days in large pyres. He died for freedom with the Anglos yet his Tejano people lost everything following the Texas Revolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blake’s Third Great Grandfather, Carlos Villarreal Esparza – Cousin of Gregorio <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Carlos Villareal Esparza (1828\u20131885), my third great grandfather & brother of Juan N. Cortina, my third great uncle. Juan and Carlos married their wives on the same day, Jan 30, 1850, in Brownsville, TX. They fought the Cortina Wars to defend Tejano land rights against Anglo expansion; Carlos the spy, intelligence, & survillance and Juan the force. . The “Cortinistas” twice defeated The Texas Rangers before U.S. President James Buchanan sent federal Army troops to Brownsville. After Juans capture, Carlos became the Brownsville sheriff where he correct false documents and anglo forged land records. He died on his 57th birthday on 25 September 1885 – he lived in the darkest period & place of American History. In the Journeys he left my 2nd Greatgrand father he said ” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Sabas
Sabas G. Cavazos (1816\u20131878) was the second great-grandfather of the Esparza sisters. He was the son of Do\u00f1a Estefana Goseascochea and the half-brother of Juan Nepomuceno Cortina, the famous Tejano leader. Sabas was a respected rancher in South Texas and an ally of prominent figures such as Richard King, Mifflin Kenedy, and Charles Stillman during the era of major land and cattle operations. Historical accounts and family lore suggest that Sabas loaned Porfirio D\u00edaz $50,000 in gold to support D\u00edaz\u2019s revolutionary efforts in the 1870s. When Sabas later traveled to Mexico City to recover the debt after D\u00edaz became president, he allegedly died under suspicious circumstances\u2014possibly poisoned\u2014though this claim remains debated among historians<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

My childhood home in Lake Jackson is 8 miles from the original grave of Stephen F. Austin – the Father of Texas. I spent most of my childhood with my grandmothers Elma & Anita.<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Tejano Heritage<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

On my mother’s side I am an Tejano Texan who came to the America’s through New Spain in 1500’s , my grandmother Elma Esparza was born in Brownsville, TX and my great grandparents are of the surnames Cortez, Cavazos, Villarreal, Longoria, & Garza. We are descendants of Colombus, Montezuma II, Cortes, Coronado, and Lope Ruiz de Esparza.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
